The Reality of the Truth Essay Example for Free
The Reality of the Truth EssayWhat exactly is the truth? Is it reality, sincerity, integrity? Is it accuracy and honesty? How can we tell the difference between the truth and lies? why does the media bugger off the power to decide for us what is true? As Oscar Wilde once said The truth is rarely unadulterated and never simple. This statement sums up the difficulties of sexual intercourse the truth, and this is furthermore marchn in Rob Sitch et als Front concern, Lies by Michael Leunig and the verse Nothing to Report by May Herschel Clarke. The television show Frontline follows the day to day streamlet of a current affairs show.It shows both on and off air aspects of what people involved with television go though on a mundane basis. microphone Moore (Rob Sitch) plays the naive host of the show, who seems to think the whole populace revolves around him. An example of this is when Emma sarcastically thanks him for helping with a story and he says Thats ok. Brian is the exe cutive manager of the show and he ultimately decides what is shown on the show and what isnt. Brooke is another composinger who intentions deception and employment to present the truth.Emma does work behind the scenes and often she should be credited, but the reporters need their ego maintained so she is never recognised for her hard work. Marty is another reporter who has been in the business for a long time, and although he knows or so Frontline presenting the incorrect truth, he does nothing to s fall out them. Like all current affairs shows, the team at Frontline are concerned with comeing ratings every night, rather than telling the real truth to people. One example of this is during the episode Add sex and stir where Brooke interviews a woman booted off her sports team because she wasnt a lesbian. This in fact is not the truth because she was kicked off the team due to her poor form, not her sexuality. Viewers are indeed manipulated into thinking that the sport is a lesb ian sport, and the reputations of the team and sport are ruined. Marty sums up this sensationalising of real truth in one quote, Ancient current affairs recipe my grandmother gave me, you way out any story, add sex and stir (Marty, Add sex and stir) Dismissal of the real truth is another technique that the current affairs show Frontline uses to gain ratings. In the episode We aint got dames, mike wishes to do a story on illegal sweatshops, but Brian dismisses it as being too heavy for the viewers. After more than persuasion, Mike thinks he has convinced Brian to show his story (because his ego has finally been satisfied), but the story ends up being a fashion show, totally insult any work that Mike has done. Although this story did attract more viewers than the sweatshop story would have, it only promotes the fact that viewers lack in knowledge about the real current issues, and they need to show pretty people with bright lights to get their attention. There are many techniques us ed in Frontline which expose the manipulation that current affairs shows go through to gain ratings. Irony is shown in the episode The siege, where Brooke asks Mrs. Forbes to sign a contract so only frontline can report her story because, Some shows are very unscrupulous (Brooke, The Seige) Brooke says not to fall through the story to other stations because they might twist her story around to set about out a point she wasnt making, but the irony was that their show was doing exactly that.Use of a handheld camera behind the scenes of the current affairs show can bring out the truth behind the lies, what we see on television may not be true in real life. This applies to Mike in the episode Add sex and stir where he is on Burkes Backyard. He is asked questions about current affairs and does not know how to answer them, then tries to defend himself by asking Burke about plants but he knows everything about them. Although he is shown as an intelligent and well presented man on televis ion, in real life he doesnt know anything. This is also seen when Mike takes part in an ABC debate, but during his introduction all of his material is said and Mike doesnt have anything good to say, which shows that he is not a good speaker in person as he is behind the desk. There is also use of verisimilitude in the show Frontline, with many real media personalities being on the show to fasten it seem more realistic in telling the truth. Examples of these celebrities are plague M Miller, Cheryl Kernot, and Bert Newton. The cartoon Lies by Michael Leunig also exposes that the media manipulates and distorts the truth, so it really is presented to us as a lie or the untruth. The cartoon shows people living in their world, but everything has the label lies on it. The billboard which says lies shows that many companies engage in deceptive advertising, and although they arent supposed to do that, they still convince people to buying their products. The theme titled lies shows that jour nalists write from their own perspective and can distort the truth to suit their opinions. The person wearing the lies shirt shows that behind brand name corporations in that respect are lies. An example of this is making clothing in sweatshops then selling it for triple the price of what its really worth (like Nike shoes) and people are paying top dollar just to wear a symbol, which supposedly brings them into an elite group of people, but really they are just lying to themselves. The point Michael Leunig is trying to make is enforced through the main technique of repetition. The word lies is seen 11 times in the comic, and it is the only word on the cartoon. If lies was only mentioned once, many people would not take notice of it, but since it is printed on the billboard, buildings, truck, newspaper, shirt and drink, it shows that lies are everywhere and it really is a big issue. Like the television series Frontline, this cartoon exposes that the world we live in is full of lies an d deception, and the media controls what we see and listen to. It is their opinion what we believe, and many people, rather than refuting what is being presented to them in the media, just believe it and keep going with their lives. The poem Nothing to Report by May Herschel Clarke is written during the contend times (1940s). During this time, leaders of the country were trying to convince people to fight overseas as a soldier, with hope of coming back as a brave hero. For this heroic image to come to light, anything negative about death in the war would have to be shielded from the people, or else they wouldnt enlist. Ms Clarkes poem targets this issue, talking about how easily death can come, One minute we was laughin next he lays beside me, grinnin dead. After the death, the papers had nothing to report therefore they were with holding the truth from people. May Herschel Clarke couldnt possibly have been the only one with a death not reported, but no one else seemed to be doing a nything about it, because the media has always been very powerful. The poem is written in colloquial language, which could reflect on her education, upbringing or location. This could also be written in that style to follow a rhyming sequence. The last line is a metaphor which shows that the paper is such an telling form of communication, it might as well be a person.Theres nothin to report the papers said This text is very similar to the television series Frontline, in trying to expose the media in its with holding and distortion of the truth. Another example in frontline of withholding the truth is during the episode This night of nights where Mike wishes to do a story about Telecom tapping into phone conversations, but seeing as they are a major sponsor of the television show, frontline cant expose the truth, and give Mike a mobile phone to help him forget about it. If this truth was exposed, telecom would have received many complaints and much abuse, but they would have deserve d it.Instead there are still people at home not suspecting a thing. In the end Mike is disadvantaged from not pursuing the story because they listen to his phone conversation about being caught drink driving, and expose him in the newspapers. In the poem Nothing to report, the last line sums up that the media does with hold information and it shouldnt be their right to decide what we see or dont see. Telling the truth is a hard concept to deal with. From the texts Frontline (Rob Sitch et. al. ), Lies by Michael Leunig and Nothing to Report by May.Herschel Clarke we can see that the media does control what we see and believe, but it isnt necessarily the truth. Why does the media have the power to decide what is true? substantially if they presented us the facts and let us decide for ourselves, they wouldnt have ratings. We are surrounded by the media (as seen in lies) and it is hard for us to ignore it all. The truth is rarely pure and never simple, in listening to the truth there i s always some form of bias, but we must leave it to ourselves to find out many versions of the so called truth and decide for ourselves what we believe.

Sherlock Holmes Essay Example for Free
Sherlock Holmes EssayHow does Arthur Conan Doyle take a leak an aura of mystery and build suspense in The Speckled annulus? To what extent are his methods typical of all the other stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes? The story The speckled band was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1982 and is one of the galore(postnominal) stories in the large Sherlock Holmes series of stories. As known the stories are found on inquiries and investigations, because of course Sherlock Holmes is an investigator, this in itself gives a sense of fervidness to the story because you know that in that respect result e a constant thrill throughout the story, especially seems as it is likely that it will be based on something like a kill, or an affair, etc. As soon as the story starts, Holmes gets straight into the action, as a poor victim comes metre to his home and asks him for help. She is portrayed to the reader as being in a very poor and vulnerable position by her face (being) all raddled and grey, with restless, frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal, she is also shivering from fear and so now the reader knows that there is a vulnerable victim, that something is wrong, and that something unjust will be done against her, and so it builds the excitement and suspense in the readers mind. This same scenario is presented in A suit of clothes of Identity when Miss Sutherland comes to Sherlock Holmes in a similar vulnerable state, frightened. As usual straight away Holmes picks up on all the little details, such as the mud stains on the victims clothes, and manages to create a clear prove in his mind of the situation. The victim is called Miss Helen Stoner. When she first came into the story she was wearing black, veiled and grey haired. She was shivering and terrified, which creates a chilling if not intriguing scene leaving the reader asking why is she in this state?, the lady also gave a violent start, by look It is fear Mr Holmes, It is terror.Th e story then goes on and Holmes is told roughly the ladys step father, who instantly Holmes recognizes as the murderer. We can make out from the story, that her step father Doctor Grimesby Roylott was a violent man who had a bad and short temper, and after his wife dies he shut himself up at home and became very violent, and we are told that he is a man of immense strength, and absolutely uncontrollable in his anger. The suspected murderer is set forth as being a very strong and in good order person, and extremely dangerous, this adds suspense and excitement to the story because from this description you can instantly tell that something out of the ordinary has got to happen with this man.The killing motive is also outre in a way, because what he was trying to kill Miss Helen Stoner for was money. His wife left money for her daughters, but if they die he would receive the money. personally I dont feel sympathy for Doctor Roylott because hes sick and twisted, hes also very selfish, but a very dangerous man.The scene of the murder adds a huge amount of suspense to the story, this is because as it is first described, the building is made out to be a scary if not haunted freaky place. The house is described as The building was of grey, lichen-blotched stone, with a high central portion and two curving wings, like the claws of a crab, thrown out on each side. In one of these wings the windows were broken and blocked with wooden boards, while the roof was partly caved in basically making it look like a picture of ruin. This creates a spooky and scary atmosphere, which makes the reader feel very cautious because its a typical description of a haunted house where anything could suddenly happen. This atmosphere can be easily related to a typical atmosphere of a murder mystery. To add to the atmosphere or fear and horror, the reader is told about the Doctors hobby of keeping wild dangerous animals, and that there is a Wild baboon and a cheetah in the grounds of the hou se.In the story Holmes suspects Grimesby Roylott as the murder suspect, and he treats the case as urgent, and helps Helen Stoner straight away. This gives the reader the impression that it is important, and so it adds to the feeling that something big is going to happen, and that the case is dangerous. The addition of creepy objects in the house also helps relate an atmosphere, such as the useless ventilator, and the ropes which hung down to the ladys bed.Holmes also suspects the animal as a dangerous exotic one, in this case it being a snake, and this is not obvious to the reader, and so they will be kept waiting to see what these strange object, and weird animals are all there for.In the end, the murderer who correctly turns out to be Doctor Roylott, gets killed by his own weapon the deadly snake. This makes the story come to an exciting end, and it in umpteen ways sums up the complete suspense and mystery that has been throughout the book, and makes it all clear to the reader at the end.The readers will also rally about if they think he deserved to get killed because he is sick and twisted, and because he does not care for any one apart from himself. I like my murder mysteries to bewilder a twist at the end and that good always wins.

The Chrysalids Essay Example for Free
The Chrysalids EssayDespite what many might think, It is a clear fact that The Chrysalids has been written, articulate and acknowledged as a warning for todays familiarity in many ways as I will elaborate more than within the following paragraph such as different types of racism still in our society, we still have this fear that god might be sending us a message through actions like disasters and This book is well known across hundreds of nations all over the world.Chrysalid has been around for several centuries and has a very important meaning in the lives of many. It would be safe to assume that this specific piece of Wyndhams work is going to be around for a long time and have an enormous impact on the lives of many people. If a person or community fears change and diversity in my persuasion they be refraining themselves from a better tomorrow, instead of creating a convergence to create and work towards a better future. In the chrysalids the Waknukian community is inhuman e to any diversionary attack by showing inflecting rejection and degradation, in simple terms the waknukians are racist. In the Chrysalids, by john Wyndham, the people of the frontier community are those who discriminate against those who are different in any way both physically and mentally, this act of discrimination has done nothing but foster and nurture a society that is cruel and inhumane. They think anything different is blaspheme, which is sent by the devil to misguide them into another tribulation. I think even people in todays society still act in this way, maybe not to this extreme or obviousness but to an extent. For example, when someone is overlooked for a job because of the glossiness of their skin, nationality or their appearance, it might not evident or they might not be straight forward

Similarities Between Dick Diver and Abe North in Tender is the Night Es
Similarities Between instrument plunger and Abe North in scratchy is the Night Dick Diver and Abe North are characters in F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel, Tender is the Night. As presented in the beginning of the novel, Dick Diver and Abe North did not seem to have much in common. As the character of Dick Diver developed, the reader found the characters to be parallel to each other. There were numerous unexpected similarities as the novel progressed. The presentation of Abe Norths character served as a trailer to the fate of Dick Diver(Stern, 117). The characters deterioration, relationships with their wives, and their effects on the other characters were some of the main similarities between Dick Diver and Abe North. At the start of the novel the characters of Dick Diver and Abe North seemed to contrast. Dick was hospitable and admired by many. Meanwhile, Abe had already deteriorated in character. The first thing that was said about Abe was negative. When Abe first appeared Mrs. Mc Kisco conveyed her opinion of him to Rosemary, Well, hes a rotten musician. (Fitzgerald, 8). This statement was related to the lack of progress in Abes profession as clarified by Brady, he was a musician who after a brilliant and precocious start had composed nothing for seven years. (Fitzgerald, 33). Proceeding from these descriptions, Abe character was reduced to a pitiful drunkard. However, Abe was not always the loser as Nicole pointed out, Abe used to be so nice... So nice. Long ago-when Dick and I were first married. If only you had known him then. (Fitzgerald, 99). At this point of the novel it seems that Dick has stamp down of his life in comparison to Abe North. Yet, Dicks own career was stagnant. Unlike Abe howe... ...gradation were parallel. Hot and ColdWinter is coming to the northern hemisphere, and with it, talk of central heating, gloves and scarves, snowfall, and record low temperatures. Monitoring temperatures is part of our everyday life whether were public lecture about the bear, our bodies, central heating, or cooking. In the United States, we typically measure temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. But in other countries, such as England, youll get the weather forecast in degrees Celsius. Recipes will advise you to bake a pie at 205C and not 400F. In fact, the Celsius scale is the most commonly apply temperature scale in the world. This week, we have special cause to wonder about the history of this scale, because November 27 is the 300th anniversary of the birthday of the man who invented it. Anders Celsius was born in Sweden in 1701. His parents didnt know that their sons work would one day make their family name an everyday word used by millions of people around the world. Meet professor CelsiusThe world A nders lived in was very different than the world we know. Much of the knowledge that we now take for granted such as the motion of Earth with notice to the Sun and planets was only beginning to be understood then. In Europe, radical and brilliant scientists, such as Galileo and Sir Isaac Newton, had been developing new and revolutionary ways of instinct the workings of the world and the universe. The era was known as "the Enlightenment," and it was a good time for someone of Anderss ability to be working in the field of science. Anderss endowment came from his family of academics one of his grandfathers was a mathematician and the other an astronomer, and his father, Nils, was a professor of astronomy. As a child, Anders showed a natural flair for mathematics, but he developed a crisp interest in astronomy and became a professor at the age of 29. So, how did a clever astronomer come to develop a temperature scale? The settle lies with the weather. When making observat ions of the night sky, Anders monitored the weather conditions, including the temperature. At the time there were a lot of different kinds of thermometers with different scales by the time Anders started working on the paradox of temperature measurement, around 35 different scales existed. (Compare this number with today, when three main scales are in use Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.
